Our work

The National Curriculum Board serves:

  • all students in every school (government and non-government)
  • teachers
  • parents and the general community
  • school administrators from state, territory, independent and Catholic schools, representative bodies of educational systems and sectors, training institutions and universities.

The development and implementation of a national curriculum will be conducted under the auspice of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) and its Productivity Agenda Working Group.

The Board’s primary role is to develop Australian national curriculum that sets core content and the achievement standards that are expected of students from Kindergarten to Year 12 in English, mathematics, the sciences and history.

As a second phase of work, national curriculum will be developed in languages and geography.

The National Curriculum Board also has a role in the National Asian Languages and Studies in School Program that aims to increase the number of high school students who will become familiar with the languages and culture of Australia’s main Asian trading partners — Japan, Indonesia, China and Korea.

The National Curriculum Board will receive annual funding of A$5 million, beginning in 2008–2009, to support its activities, and its final governance model will be established by no later than 1 January 2009.
